Background and Details
In 1982, Cooperative Federal (Syracuse Cooperative Federal Credit Union) was organized by a group of local activists seeking a viable alternative to global corporate banks. Their vision was radical: divestment from the racist Apartheid regime in South Africa; fair services for low-wage workers, people of color, single women, the LGBT community, activists and part-time or nontraditional workers; a non-profit financial cooperative operated by the people and for the people.
The credit union quickly took root, outgrowing its original home inside the Syracuse Real Food Cooperative and pursuing a vision to become a city-wide force in the movement for grassroots economic empowerment. Cooperative Federal today has multiple branches, over 3,500 member households and organizations, $18.9 million in assets under management, and has invested more than $100 million in Syracuse neighborhoods in the form of home loans, microbusiness loans, and fair and affordable consumer credit. In many ways, it is a living example of the democratic, localized, “people-over-profit” economic system that is being sought by the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Cooperative Federal exists to foster economic justice, mutual aid, and reinvestment in all the neighborhoods of Syracuse, NY. As a non-profit, certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI – US Treasury Dep.) and a HUD Housing Counseling Affiliate, Cooperative Federal offers more than accounts and loans. They have a range of education and asset-building services including financial education, one-on-on counseling, downpayment assistance, microbusiness technical assistance, and more. The anniversary gala will recognize several key partners involved with the credit union’s community development initiatives, and all event proceeds will be used to help sustain those programs.
The anniversary event will also feature a special performance by the D.R.E.A.M. Freedom Revival, a Syracuse-based “collaborative, inclusive, and participatory political theater company” that deals with issues of exploitation, justice, democracy and activism.
