May Day is International Workers' Day

Happy International Workers' Day! Cooperative Federal is open on May 1, 2017, to ensure our members can access the services they need, but as always this day is an important holiday to our credit union. Workers of the World, Unite.

We stand in solidarity with our staffers and members participating in strikes and labor activism on this May Day. The Board of Directors and Management Team also announced that all of our staff members who are on the job today will receive holiday pay, as well as bonus holiday hours to be used on their choice of future days.

Origins of May Day

On May 1, 1886, hundreds of thousands of American workers went on strike as part of a movement to win the eight-hour day. The May Day movement was an attempt by common people to gain some control over their lives and work. It took years of struggle before U.S. workers eventually won the eight-hour day for all; when we did, it set a standard for the whole world. May Day is celebrated throughout the world, but here in its birthplace, it has been a lost holiday.

"Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest and eight for what we will!"
