Syracuse Financial Empowerment Center Goes Virtual






What is the Financial Empowerment Center?

The Syracuse Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) launched in July 2019 as a free financial counseling service for city of Syracuse residents to assist individuals with banking, establishing credit and savings, and managing debt. The FEC offers one-on-one private and professional counseling sessions that empower clients with the tools they need to take control of their finances.

The FEC and Coronavirus

Coronavirus (COVID-19) closures are impacting families and businesses alike and the need for professional financial services are more important than ever. FEC counselors are meeting with clients virtually, via video conference or phone, to help curb the financial hits people are facing. 

With new emergency aid measures at the state and federal level, FEC counselors are helping residents navigate their eligibility for assistance with student loans, medical debt, mortgage and utility payments, and foreclosure proceedings. They're also helping residents file for unemployment and negotiate with financial institutions and creditors.

This comes in addition to their typical appointment trajectory, where a client can expect:

  • A review of their credit report and a strategy for managing credit and increasing their credit score.
  • To create a household budget to strategize spending and set savings goals.
  • To learn how to make a debt payment plan, dispute debt, and negotiate with creditors.
  • Referrals to community resources to find safe and affordable financial products.

The FEC and Cooperative Federal

In collaboration with Home HeadQuarters and the City of Syracuse, Cooperative Federal is an FEC partner, service location and counseling provider. We encourage residents to take advantage of FEC virtual counseling at this time by calling 315-474-1939 ext. 5, registering through the registration portal, or emailing the FEC team.
