In-School Savings Branches are the sharpest tools in Coop Fed's financial capability toolkit. Bringing lessons about saving and money management outside of the classroom allows students to learn financial education on their own terms. Abstract ideas are applied to real-life decisions, in a safe environment with trusted advisors.
Why Save at School?
Coop Fed is keenly aware of the obstacles that our students must overcome: the high cost of college, the lack of a living wage, the burden of educational and consumer debt – and so we know that it is crucial for young people to get the strongest possible start. To Cooperative Federal, that means making careful decisions, and learning to save “early and often.”
Cooperative Federal has in-school branches at three Syracuse City School District high schools and one K-8 school. Each site is slightly different but they all have one primary goal: encouraging students to learn the habit of saving from an early age.
Falcons' Trust George W. Fowler Public Service Leadership Academy
Falcons' Trust was opened in 2009, and will open for 2018-2019 school year on October 5th, 2018. Our hours will be from 10:30 am - 1:00 pm on Fridays (please do check our calendar as we do move the date based on school schedules some weeks). We provide savings accounts, direct deposit for paychecks and financial education and advising. We also provide opportunities for students to work in our branch and learn skills related operating a financial institution.
Henninger High Savings Anthony A. Henninger High School
Henninger High Savings has been open since 2013. This year we have been asked to move into the school store in the Cafeteria which is great! We will need to delay our opening until the school district moves our video cameras and internet access to this new location. We will post an estimated date of opening as soon as we have a date from the school district. We provide savings accounts, direct deposit for paychecks and financial education and advising. Henninger students work with teachers and Coop Fed staff to learn marketing skills while promoting the branch at their school.
Nottingham Federal William Nottingham High School
Nottingham Federal is our newest high school branch, opened in 2014, but has grown rapidly. This branch is open on Wednesdays & Fridays during lunch periods (10:30 am - 1:00 pm). Please do check our calendar as we do move the date based on school schedules some weeks. We provide savings accounts, direct deposit for paychecks and financial education and advising. Students with special needs learn career readiness skills interning in our branch, and students in Nottingham's DECA program apply lessons in marketing to help raise awareness about our program among their peers.
Savings Days at Edward Smith K-8 School
Our Savings Days program has been operating at Ed Smith since 2008. Each week, students can bring deposits to the main office to be picked up by our staff. Staff members also make classroom visits to teach kids about "saving, spending and sharing" and work with school faculty to inform parents and guardians about the program.
